The term transgender describes someone who identifies as a gender or has a gender identity different than the gender they were assigned at birth. This includes people who identify as non-binary, genderfluid, and agender.
A person who identifies as, or desires to live and be accepted as, a member of the sex opposite to that assigned at birth, were also called transsexual, but this term is less common now.
- People assigned female at birth but identify as male identities are usually abbreviated "FtM" and known as trans men.
- People assigned male at birth who identify as female identities are usually abbreviated "MtF" and known as trans women.
People who are not trans are called "cisgender".
