Southeast Asia, or Southeastern Asia, is a region in Asia, surrounded by countries such as China, India and Australia. 11 countries are in this region - Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (or Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Ten of them (excluding East Timor) are member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Many countries in the region were colonized by European powers as early as the 16th century - Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam formed French Indochina; Indonesia was a Dutch territory; the Philippines was ruled by the Spanish and later, the Americans; Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar were former British colonies - before gaining independence in the mid-20th century after World War II.

The region is heavily populated by Austronesian peoples, with significant numbers of other races such as Chinese and Indians. It is a popular destination for tourists for its tropical climate and exotic cultures.

Spanking in Southeast Asia[edit]

Of the 11 Southeast Asian countries, three - Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei - retain the practice of judicial corporal punishment in the form of caning (for males only) on the bare buttocks. Syariah (or Sharia) law is practiced in Malaysia and Indonesia's Aceh state, where Muslims (both men and women) who have violated certain regulations may be punished by a less severe form of caning on the back over clothing. School corporal punishment is also widespread in Singapore and Malaysia and other countries as well, like Thailand and Vietnam. Domestic spanking is not uncommon, as many parents in the region frequently use corporal punishment to discipline their children.

The preferred implement for corporal punishment in Southeast Asia is the rattan cane. Rattan is native to this region and the English word rattan, in fact, derives from the Malay and Indonesian word rotan.

Little is known about BDSM and consensual and erotic spanking in most of these countries due to their conservative nature.
