A graphic novel (sometimes abbreviated GN) is a book-length self-contained story told in comics (or manga) form and published in a single binding. It is the comics equivalent to a novel or novella.

It can apply to works which were previously published serially in periodical comic books, or to works produced specifically for book-format publication. In the comic book industry, the minimum page count for a graphic novel can be 48, 64, 72, or 96 pages.

The term "graphic novel" was popularized by Will Eisner.
