The gluteus maximus is the largest and most superficial of the three gluteal muscles. It makes up a large portion of the shape and appearance of the two hemispheres of the buttocks. The other two parts are gluteus medius and gluteus minimus which are smaller and in deeper layers. The plural of gluteus maximus is glutei maximi.
