The gluteus maximus is the largest and most superficial of the three gluteal muscles. It makes up a large portion of the shape and appearance of the two hemispheres of the buttocks. The other two parts are gluteus medius and gluteus minimus which are smaller and in deeper layers. The plural of gluteus maximus is glutei maximi.

The large size of the glutei maximi is one of the most characteristic features of the muscular system in humans, connected as they are with the power of maintaining the trunk in the erect posture. This uniquely large and fleshy mass, in turn, is what makes the human buttocks so ideal for spanking.

Straining (tensing) the buttocks muscles is also known as clenching. They can also be taut by bending the legs.

The glutea maxima can be exercised for example by hiking, running, stair-climbing, cycling, step aerobics, kickboxing, squats, lunges, step ups, quadruped hip extensions and deadlifts. The shape of the buttocks can also be improved by fat-burning exercises and healthy diet.
