Flatulence, colloquially referred to as farting, breaking wind, or passing gas, is the act of passing out intestinal gas through the anus, producing a foul odor that smells like feces, and is usually accompanied by a noise. Flatulence in humans is normal, but the amount and frequency may vary largely from person to person.
Flatus (the medical term for gas generated in the stomach or intestines) is brought to the rectum by specialized contractions of the muscles in the intestines and colon. The noises commonly associated with flatulence are caused by the vibration of the anal sphincter, and occasionally by the closed buttocks.
In many cultures, the noise and odor produced during flatulence can be socially embarrassing (to the person producing them), and can be a source of comedy as well.
Some people have the ability to control flatulence and can fart whenever they wish to.
