The buckle or clasp is a device used for fastening two loose ends, with one end attached to it and the other held by a catch in a secure but adjustable manner. Buckles are most commonly made of metal and used in straps, including belts. Typically a buckle will allow to fasten the strap at different lengths, making it looser or tighter, as needed.

A strap with a buckle is also known as a buckle-strap. A buckle can also be attached to a different piece of material from the one that is fastened to it, for example in shoes, rucksacks and other objects.

Buckles in BDSM[edit]

In BDSM, buckles are used in bondage, e.g. in cuffs for wrists and ankles, in harnesses and collars.

When a belt is used for spanking, one must be careful to never hit with the buckle end, or injury can result. This is best avoided by doubling up the belt, or by holding the buckle in one's hand and coiling up the belt around the hand once or twice to shorten it to a suitable length.
