A bench is a piece of long furniture for sitting, designed to accommodate more than one person. It can have a backrest and armrests, or can have only either or not both at all. They are used for sitting indoors (often in rows) or outdoors (in parks). Indoor benches are usually made of wood and may be padded for comfort. Outdoor benches can be made of either wood, concrete, metal, plastic, or any combination of these materials.

A simple wooden bench without backrests and armrests — a trestle bench — can be used to place the spankee in a suitable spanking position. The most commonly used positions are the lying position and the bent-over-object position, but a bench, due to its simplicity, is very versatile and allows for many more imaginative positions. Benches also permit the use of restraints such as rope, belts and/or straps, if bondage is desired.

A whipping bench is a special type of spanking furniture that is used both in the past and now (for BDSM activities). There are also more sophisticated modern variants that resemble a bench: see spanking bench.

A bench facilitates the OTK position as the spanker can sit down and the spankee can be laid across the spanker's lap with the rest of the body (legs and arms) resting on the bench.

Other punitive uses[edit]

Benches can also be used for time-outs just like stools.
