To skelp means to beat or slap, especially the backside. The word came into English via Scottish.

Skelping is the present participle of the verb (as in "she was skelping his butt"). The noun skelp means a blow, a smart stroke.

The word is used repeatably in the Redwall series of books as skelp my/you/their tail to reference the spanking of the anthropomorphic characters. This phrase works with humans too, with tail also being an allusion to the buttocks.
