After her father is killed, Mattie Ross (Kim Darby), a headstrong 14-year-old girl, hires the aging, irascible and drunken U.S. Marshal Rooster J. Cogburn (John Wayne) to track down the killer, Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey). To do so, the pair must head into Indian territory and are joined by a young Texas Ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), who also hopes to capture Chaney and collect a reward.
The spanking scene
The two men are about to leave on their mission. Mattie wants to join them but is told to stay. To shake her off, the men bolt off on their horses, but Mattie, stubbornly, goes after them. Suddenly, out of nowhere, La Boeuf jumps out on her and pulls her to the ground from her horse. He then forces her face down on the ground and breaks off a switch from a nearby bush. Threatening to give her welts that "look like worms", he begins to spank her posterior firmly, causing her to yell out in pain.
More than 40 spanks are administered, about 30 of which are shown on screen, and La Boeuf has no intention of stopping until U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn aims a gun at him and rather insists on it. He comments that La Boeuf is enjoying himself a little too much. This may be the first purely sadistic spanking scene to appear in a mainstream Hollywood film. An earlier example of sadism can be found in the British film Lord of the Flies (1963). (See the links to stills of this scene below.)
Kim Darby (born 1947) was actually 21 or 22 when the movie was shot, but looks a lot younger in the movie.
Remake in 2010
A second film adaptation was made by the Coen brothers in 2010. It received much critical acclaim, including a dozen Academy Award nominations. Although this version is quite similar in many ways to the previous film, it includes more scenes from the novel. Mattie Ross is played by 13-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges is Rooster Cogburn and Matt Damon plays La Boeuf.
Early in the story, La Boeuf threatens to give Mattie a spanking when they first meet after she repeatedly insults him. Later on, the spanking scene that occurs is also similar to the 1969 film except La Boeuf first gives the girl several smacks with his hand before using a switch on her. The element of sadism is also absent in the latter version. La Boeuf is extremely angry but takes no pleasure in beating the girl.
