Strictly English is a British spanking video producer in business since 1995. The last major British studio to emerge before the internet era, it was a market leader in Britain in the first decade of the 21st century while also winning recognition in the USA. The bearded actor sometimes called Stephen English played the central role in its development, as director and cameraman as well as a frequent performer.

The first film produced by Strictly English was The House with Gillian Taylor and Lucy Bailey. In its early years, the studio had a close relationship with Red Stripe, using some of the same actors and sets in similar scenarios (e.g., Good Girl, Bad Girl and Bare Bottom Punishment). It collaborated with Moonglow in the marketing and distribution of its DVDs in Britain.

Performers[edit]

Among the popular actresses repeatedly cast by Strictly English are Catherine Corbett, Samantha Johnson, Rebeckah Jordan, Sarah Harvey Lewis, Lesley Saye, Elizabeth Simpson, and Leia-Ann Woods. The studio has occasionally imported American performers, notably Niki Flynn and Samantha Woodley, and it raised its profile by advancing the film careers of Rosaleen Young and Amelia Jane Rutherford at an early stage. In addition to acting in a dozen videos, Suzi Martell was co-writer and co-director for several titles, aiming to bring greater sensitivity to the submissive female viewpoint.

Style and content[edit]

The great majority of Strictly English releases depict the spanking, strapping, and caning of young women by men. Fewer than 10 per cent of its titles are exclusively F/F and none includes F/M pairings. Although many films feature just two or three actors performing in a single room, the studio has also presented more elaborate productions with multiple sets, outdoor sequences, and up to eight characters. The four films in the Birchington Manor saga may be its highest-budget creations.

Moving away from school settings, Strictly English focused on spankings in the workplace and the home. In nine films about Professor Templeton, the spanked university student was in effect a successor to the spanked schoolgirl. The studio often aspired to a degree of dramatic realism and psychological depth. Its films never contain hard-core sex scenes but most acknowledge the eroticism of spanking fairly openly. Several plots concern women who find the thought of corporal punishment exciting and more or less deliberately engineer situations in which they are likely to receive it. Perhaps the most famous example of this is the Tiffany Jones trilogy of Paperback Writer, Caught in the Act, and Little Red Apples.

The clarity of the consensual element in its later plotlines enabled Strictly English to satisfy the requirements of British censors. In 2006, Birchington Manor and Living Doll were among the first spanking videos ever passed by the British Board of Film Classification (with an R18 rating). This meant that Strictly English, unlike any other spanking studio, had a selection of its DVDs legitimately displayed for sale in mainstream sex shops throughout Britain.

Online business model[edit]

Compared with other established British producers, Strictly English adapted effectively to the rise of the internet, setting up a website called Strictly English Online and cutting up its films into short clips for sale through numerous outlets. Since 2010, most of its new DVDs have consisted of assorted clips. They are issued in two long-running series. Best of the Brits offers digitally remastered excerpts from earlier Strictly English and Red Stripe titles. The Strictly English Spanking Channel combines similar re-releases with previously unseen footage and a certain amount of new material, often featuring a brunette called Chloe.

Strictly English has produced over seventy original titles. Their chronology is not always easy to establish, as catalogue numbers seem arbitrary. Films may bear their date of release on DVD although first sold on video cassette many years earlier. In some cases, digitisation was accompanied by re-editing, so a given title may exist in more than one version.
