Staked out is a position for corporal punishment that was historically mostly used to punish adult slaves, and sometimes prisoners of war, by flogging.

The method is used for outdoor punishments. The person to be whipped is made to lie prostrate on the ground, typically in a state of full nudity. Pegs are driven into the ground and the person's wrists and ankles are tied with rope to these pegs, such that the person is restrained tight and unable to free themselves or move away.

The basic variants are:

  • I position (arms together, legs together, two pegs)
  • T position (arms apart, legs together, three pegs)
  • Y position (arms apart, legs together, three pegs)
  • ⅄ position ("reverse Y position", arms together, legs apart, three pegs)
  • X position ("spreadeagle position", four pegs)

In BDSM[edit]

In modern BDSM, the "staked out" position is popular both lying prostrate and face up; the latter providing access to face, breasts and genitals. Besides whipping, the restrained lying positions are also well suited for all kinds of play, such as spanking, wax play, etc.

  • Staked out bondage with pegs on the ground is popular for outdoor BDSM play, such as on a lawn or on a beach. A blanket on the ground can add more comfort.
  • A common variant that can be used indoors and has added comfort is to use a bed and the four bedposts instead.
  • Alternatively, a mattress can be put on the ground and the subject tied to the mattress, or to anchor points further away.
  • A bondage table or a bondage bed offer further possibilities for restraint and simplifies matters for the top.
  • A spreadeagle table minimizes the lying surface to the person's body shape and can be built to optimize the bondage in this specific position.
