A secondary school, also known as high school, or college depending on location, is the last stage of compulsory education. The next stage of education is optionally tertiary school. Children usually transfer to secondary school between the ages of 11-14 years, and finish between the ages of 16-18 years, though there is considerable variation from country to country (see schoolchild).

The purpose of secondary education can be to give common knowledge, to prepare for either higher education or vocational education, or to train directly to a profession.

While there are a few compulsory subjects, most subjects are electives, so unlike previous levels students do not take most of their subjects with the same people. Some secondary school have a Dean in charge of each year group.

Secondary schools and spanking[edit]

Classroom punishment in book illustration by Eric Stanton.

In secondary schools where school corporal punishment is (or was) used, its application tends to be more formal than in elementary/junior schools or at-home domestic disciplinary spanking. In some parts of the U.S., it is more common for junior students to receive CP than seniors, but in other places the opposite can be the case. In Singapore, the peak age for schoolboys being caned is 15-16; this was also true of many secondary schools in the United Kingdom before its abolition.

In secondary schools the classroom teacher often does not execute the chastisement. Instead, the student is more likely to be sent to the Dean's Office, or the office of the Associate/Vice-Principal or Principal, for punishment. U.S. high-school paddlings, where they still exist at all, are nowadays almost invariably carried out privately in the office, whereas up to and including the 1980s it was common in some areas for CP to be administered in a hallway or even in front of the class.

One example captured on film can be seen in The Principal's Office, a truTV reality television series documenting the lives and work of 30 school principals in different parts of the U.S. In the "Three Licks" episode (season one, 2008), a teenage girl at Booneville High School in Arkansas faces all-day Saturday detention for repeated tardiness. The junior chooses the option of taking three strokes from a large school paddle for a reduced half-day of detention. The sound of the paddle striking the seat of her pants, behind the closed door of the office, is heard on camera. (A video clip is available on YouTube.)
