Prostration is a pose (or the act of assuming that pose) expressing reverence and complete submission. Typically prostration is distinguished from the lesser acts of bowing or kneeling by involving a part of the body above the knee touching the ground, especially the hands. Thus, prostration can take different forms, including on all fours, knee-chest and lying prostrate. Prostration is always done on the ground without using any furniture, to make onself as low as possible, but it can be done on a carpet.

Prostration is known in practically any culture on the planet throughout history. It has applications from religion to secular ceremonies, from Yoga to BDSM. Some prostrate positions can be used as spanking positions.

The lunge position is related, but is not generally included among the poses called "prostrate".
