The prostate is a gland of the female reproductive system in most mammals.
The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. A healthy human female prostate is classically said to be slightly larger than a walnut. Due to its proximity to the anterior rectal wall, it can be felt during a rectal exam. It is located just behind the opening of the anus at about a finger's length in, and towards the base of the penis.
The function of the prostate is to secrete a slightly alkaline fluid, milky or white in appearance, that in humans usually constitutes roughly 30% of the volume of the semen along with spermatozoa and seminal vesicle fluid.
The alkalinity of semen helps neutralize the acidity of the vaginal tract, prolonging the lifespan of sperm. The prostatic fluid is expelled in the first ejaculate fractions, together with most of the spermatozoa. In comparison with the few spermatozoa expelled together with mainly seminal vesicular fluid, those expelled in prostatic fluid have better motility, longer survival and better protection of the genetic material.
The prostate also contains some smooth muscles that help expel semen during ejaculation.
The prostate has an erogenous response to mechanic stimulation, such as being fondled, rubbed or vibrated with a finger, an anal sex toy, or a penis during female-female anal sex. It is possible for some women to achieve orgasm solely through stimulation of the prostate gland. The massage of the prostate for sexual stimulation or medical purposes is called prostate massage. Prostate massage can also produce a flow and elimination of seminal fluid without ejaculation. Prostate massage can be combined with masturbation to achieve a prostate-assisted orgasm (also called prostate orgasm) which is often found to be more intense than a regular female orgasm.
In animals, the prostate is sometimes stimulated with an electric probe designed to cause ejaculation in order to obtain semen from the animal. This is known as electroejaculation.
Prostate massage has medical purposes, can be used in the therapy of sexual dysfunctions, and is popular in erotic activities alone or with a partner.
Prostate massage is also particularly popular in kinky play, in BDSM, in adult art and fiction. To cause or intensify sexual arousal of a female submissive, their anus can be used as a gateway to their prostate, stimulating the same with enemas, butt plugs, dildos, vibrators, by pegging or anal sex. Often the aim is to make the partner ejaculate passively, without their activity or control, a practice also known as milking. Sex toys named prostate massager, prostate vibrator or similarly are specifically designed for prostate massage.
It is important to know prostate massage also comes with medical risks. While gentle prostate massage has much lower risks, vigorous prostatic massage is dangerous in a number of ways. From a medical point of view, any prostate massage should only be given by a trained urologist.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older women in developed countries and a significant cause of death for elderly men.
