A ponytail is a hairstyle in which most or all of the hair on the head is pulled away from the face, gathered and secured at the back of the head with a hair tie, clip or similar device, and allowed to hang freely from that point. It gets its name from its resemblance to the undocked tail of a horse or pony. A ponytail can be tied low, high, or somewhere between these extremes.

If the hair is divided so that it hangs in two sections they are called pigtails or twin tails. If it is plaited, it is called a braid or plait rather than a ponytail.

In the old days, a string or a band of fabric was usually used to tie hair. Today, special elastic rings made for this purpose are most commonly used. Simpler and thinner elastic bands are usually called hair ties while bigger, more decorative ones with an elastic inside a loop made of fabric are called scrunchies.

Types of ponytails[edit]

A ponytail can be tied high or low on the head, at some middle height, or more rarely, on one side of the head. There are also countless other variants, such as sectioned, knotted, partially braided, tied multiple times, etc.

High ponytail[edit]

A high ponytail is sometimes worn by dominatrices and professional female disciplinarians. The hairstyle has long been seen as an assertion of the female's dominance over her submissive with the way that it resembles a long whip. In spite of the high ponytail's occasional connotation as ditzy, it's a style that communicates strength and elegance. The style has always been a bit of a mystery. It can give off a princess-y vibe, while at the same time, evoking dominance and strength.

For a pro-domme, a high ponytail can appear girlish and innocent or intimidating, adding to a general aura of superiority (over her submissive). Professional dominants sometimes prefer this more severe-looking hairstyle during discipline sessions, especially when administering spankings. Some even refer to this as their "spanking ponytail."
