Nostalgia (from Ancient Greek nostos="returning home" and algos="pain") means:

  1. A longing for home or familiar surroundings; homesickness.
  2. A bittersweet yearning for things of the past.

The corresponding adjective is nostalgic.

Nostalgia sometimes includes a general interest in past eras and their personalities and events, especially the good old days of a few generations back recast in an idyllic light. It can also refer to memories of one's own youth, such as in the phrase "to take a trip down memory lane".

Nostalgia is often triggered by something reminding the individual of an event or item from their past. The resulting emotion can vary from happiness to sorrow. The term of "feeling nostalgic" is more commonly used to describe pleasurable emotions associated with and/or a longing to go back to a particular period of time.

In a slight variation from the conventional usage of the word nostalgia, some intend to convey the meaning of "a feeling of appreciation for the past or something related to the past, often in an idealized form." This differs from the standard usage in that it does not necessarily include a longing or yearning to return to the past, but instead simply an appreciation for it.

Much literature, even in genres such as fantasy or science fiction, is written with nostalgic thoughts and feelings clearly showing.

Nostalgia and spanking[edit]

A person can feel nostalgia for pretty much anything associated with the past, including things such as the use of corporal punishment by parents and/or teachers, the use of judicial corporal punishment to punish lawbreakers, the roles of males and females in traditional society, the strict hierarchies within traditional households with domestic servants, or even the days when slavery was common and acceptable.

Among consenting adults, such nostalgia can be turned into real life play and/or various types of (BDSM) relationships, ranging from Daddy/girl to Domestic Discipline, Taken In Hand relationships and Master/slave relationships. These are all based, in a way, on a kind of idealized model of the past.

Nostalgia can also manifest itself in a liking for objects and items considered "traditional" or "old-fashioned", such as clothing, styles of dress and props from yesteryear. This is found for example in the BDSM community, but also in other subcultures and fashion styles such as goth or lolita fashion.

Nostalgia and spanking art[edit]

An example of vintage spanking photography.

Spanking art (in literature, visual art, film and other art forms) often portrays scenes from past eras. These are often fictional and based on a mixture of inspirations: the artist's or writer's knowledge of history, assumptions, and pure imagination. Thus they do not necessarily reflect the actual past but a more or less fictional interpretation of the same. The way such "spankings of yesteryear" in works of literature, art, or film are presented can range from critical to nostalgic.

Fans of spanking art can also view old, "vintage" works of spanking art with feelings of nostalgia, such as from the era of early 20th century French spanking literature, early spanking video productions from the 1950s and 60s, or early issues of spanking magazines.

There are also forums and groups where members share spanking memories from their childhood.
