From Spanking Art

A newsgroup is a repository for postings within the Usenet system. Newsgroups have dot-separated names such as alt.parenting.spanking that place the group in a structured hierarchy that describes the discussion topic. Usually the postings are plain text, but some newsgroups named "binaries" also permit sharing other files such as image files.

Newsgroups are technically distinct from, but functionally similar to, web forums on the World Wide Web.

To read and participate in newsgroups, you need software which is called a newsreader or news client. However these days Google also offers access to many newsgroups via a normal web browser.
