Leather paddle
A leather paddle is a flexible spanking implement in the shape of a paddle and made of (usually thick and comparatively stiff) leather.
Leather paddles can be one or two layered. The two layered versions are more common and are made of two equal pieces of leather that are sewn together. Some of these have a spine of a different material, e.g. metal, for additional stiffness. The handle of a leather paddle can be from the same material as the rest (especially in double-layered paddles with a spine), or the leather is fixed into a wooden handle which provides a better grip.
Leather padddles are similar to straps, but they are typically stiffer and their shape widens whereas a strap is just straight. Also, straps are rarely double-layered. The paddle shape can be rounded or angular. Some leather paddles come with holes to reduce the air resistance, as in some wooden paddles.
The Knoppler paddle[edit]
The existence of a specific histioric type of leather paddle named Knoppler paddle is uncertain.
Some BDSM/spanking implement producers have leather paddles named Knoppler paddle in their product line, for example strictlywhips.com who claim the implement is "originating from eastern Europe and it's (sic!) design roots are probably from the farm yard butter paddle or shaper".
According to Mistress Penny from Strictly Leather, a British BDSM and spanking toy maker, the Knoppler paddle "was used to administer punishment in schools and prisons in Germany and nearby countries. Normally 12 to 16 inches (30 to 41 cm) long and approx 5 ″ (13 cm) wide, the slapper end is shapped with a square hitting area. It is usually constructed from leather but wooden versions have also been seen. The use of the knoppler paddle has now spread worldwide and was adopted extensively in North America possibly because of immigration from Europe during the early 1930s."
Wikipedia had an unsourced article "Knoppler paddle"[1] that was deleted in 2017. Mirrors of this article still exist on the Web. Independent sources confirming the existence of an implement of this name or design in Germany or other parts of Europe have not yet been found.
