Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika), is a country in Northern Europe. Its population is more than 2 million, its official language is Latvian, and its capital and largest city is Riga.

Latvia was populated by ancient Baltic peoples since 2000 BC. In the early medieval period, the people resisted Christianization and became subject to attack in the Northern Crusades. The modern capital, Riga, was founded in 1201 by Teutonic colonists and became the first major city in the Baltic region and, after 1282, a principal trading center in the Hanseatic League. Due to its strategic location and prosperous city, Latvia was a frequent focal point for conflict and conquest between at least four major powers - the State of the Teutonic Order (later Germany), the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Sweden and Russia. Latvia was dominated by imperial Russia until it won independence in the 1920s after the Russian Revolution. It was later absorbed into the Soviet Union (USSR) and was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941 before being retaken by the Soviets in 1944. Latvia regained its independence in August 1991 following the gradual collapse of the USSR.

Latvia is now governed by a parliamentary republic with the President as the head of state and the Prime Minister as the head of government. It has a very high Human Development Index and has rebounded to become one of the fastest growing economies in Europe after the 2008-2010 global financial crisis. It is a member of the European Union, the United Nations, NATO, and other international organizations.

Spanking in Latvia[edit]

In Latvia, there is a spanking tradition on Palm Sunday (called Pussy Willow Sunday) morning. Children and women are awoken by being spanked with switches of pussy willow or (rarely) birch.

Latvia has prohibited school corporal punishment and also banned the parental spanking of children (in 1998).
