An image file is an electronic or computer file containing the information needed to display a digital image. This information must be encoded in some way, typically by means of an image file format. Images typically occupy relatively large amounts of storage, and so various methods of file compression are frequently used on image files.
Image files are the way in which images are published and shared on the World Wide Web. Most web browsers can natively display JPG, GIF and PNG images.
Image files are also used to send and receive images via e-mail or other Internet services.
Image files can be created and edited with graphics software such as the Gimp or Adobe Photoshop. Digital cameras store the photographs taken typically in JPG image files.
