In the 1940s and 1950s, he worked as illustrator for newspapers, magazines, and major advertisement campaigns such as for Coca Cola and the US government. His work is "characterized by a warmth and playfulness and clever compositional ideas" as well as gentle humor.
In the 1960s he transitioned to portraits and landscapes, changing his signature to "Richard F. Williams."
