Claudine is a comedy-drama from 1974, directed by John Berry and filmed on location in New York City, primarily Harlem. The film stars Diahann Carroll (as Claudine), James Earl Jones, and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs.
Claudine is a realistic – sometimes gritty, sometimes comic – contemporary drama about a single mother living on welfare in Harlem who is struggling to provide for her six children. The story centers around her often tempestuous romance with Roop (James Earl Jones), a cheerful garbageman she meets while working on the side as a maid.
The spanking scene
After learning that her daughter (who appears to be around 16) has become pregnant – thus, repeating the same mistake that has all-but-ruined her own life – Claudine becomes enraged. After tearing open her blouse, she throws the struggling girl onto the bed and beats her vigorously with a hairbrush.
