Bizarre (from French bizarre=“odd, peculiar") means "strangely unconventional in style or appearance". The adjective bizarre is sometimes used for non-mainstream and/or paraphilic, such as fetishistic, subject matter and media. This usage came into popularity in the mid-20th century and came out of fashion towards the end of the 20th century.
The term bizarre is found in various fetish/BDSM publications (magazines, videos), mainly from the 1940s to 1980s. For a while, it was a kind of code word in the porn industry for fetish/BDSM subject matter and "unusual" paraphilia.
John Willie's Bizarre magazine is not to be confused with a modern British lifestyle magazine of the same title that is published since 1997, which is not related to the fetish magazine.
