Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic (Greek: Ελληνική Δημοκρατία), is a country in Southern Europe. Its population is about 10.7 million. Its capital and largest city is Athens, and its official language is Greek. Greece is made up of the Greek mainland in the Balkan Peninsula and a large number of islands in the seas surrounding the mainland.
The history of Greece can be traced back to the civilization of ancient Greece, which was the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature and historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama. The modern state of Greece was established in 1830 after the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832), fought between the Greeks and the Ottoman Empire.
Greece is a member of the European Union and is a developed country with very high standards of living. However, starting from late 2009, Greece is currently facing a severe government debt crisis.
